On Saturday Dave Ryan, Chief Coach of Watford Freestyle, put on a fight show at Orbital Community Centre in Watford. Five of our fighters were matched with kickboxers of similar age, size and ability in this exciting event. Meghan, Cameron and Helen Milne all put in good performances but lost narrowly. Charlie Robinson and Brendan Martin both won their fights, despite Brendan’s opponent being a head taller than him! They showcased great skills and very sharp timing. Well done to all of our fighters, you made the Academy proud!
On Sunday was the Top Ten British Open. This national competition is part of the BodyPower Expo at the NEC in Birmingham, and we had two fighters competing. Chris Northrop competed in two points categories. He took home a 3rd place in Intermediate and won the Novice points, showing great improvement.
Academy owner Alex Kennedy competed in both the -79kg and -84kg Light Continuous. First up was the -84kgs which was a straight final against a class fighter, which he won! He got better as the tournament went on; in the -79kg he fought a tough fighter in the semi-final but made it through to the final, where he completely dominated against a seasoned fighter, making him the Top Ten British Champion in both categories – a fantastic result!
