Over the weekend of the 11th-12th October, the Guildford Predatorz Kickboxing team competed at the Bristol Open. This is one of the biggest UK competitions and attracts some of the best fighters from Europe and America. The competition is spread over two days, Saturday hosting the Continuous, Tag Team Points Fighting and the Open Weight events. Sunday covers all the rest of the Points fighting divisions.

On Saturday we had 5 competitors and first up we had a very talented prospect, 12-year-old Giorgio Visioli in the -37kg Continuous boys. Off the back of taking 2 golds and a silver at the Hands Down interclub the weekend before, we were hoping for his good run to continue. Unfortunately in the 1st round he came up against an excellent and very experienced fighter and although it was a very close and exciting fight, Giorgio lost by a very small margin. His opponent took silver in a very big and high class division which will give him plenty of experience for the future.

Next to feature was Lizzie Bell in the ladies +60kg Intermediate Continuous. In the semi finals she had a very tough fighter from an excellent gym. They had a fast and furious 2 round fight which swayed one way then the other, before Liz started to edge ahead taking a memorable victory. Her final was a more tactical affair which Liz won with superior kicking and movement taking a very hard earned gold!

Then Mary Hatton was up, fighting in a Continuous division for the first time. After two battling displays Mary managed to fight her way to final of the ladies -60kg Intermediates and although gave everything she had, see narrowly lost out to a more experienced fighter. However a silver medal was fantastic achievement at her level.

Next up was Chief Instructor Alex Kennedy in the Advanced Mens -84kg Continuous Division. Having won this title 2 years ago and taking silver last year, he was determined to take the title again. In the semi-final he came up against a German international fighter, after the early exchanges Alex quickly gained control of the fight and effectively stopped his opponent with around a minute left in the second round, when he pulled out due to a chest injury. In the final Alex came up against an opponent he beat in the final of this years WAKO British championships. His opponent was very determined to avenge the defeat from early on in the year and started with real intent. The first round was very close with only a point or so in it. The beginning of the second started in the same vein, however soon Alex started to take control and finished strongly ending up the clear winner.

Finally Helen Milne took to the tatamis, competing the Advanced ladies -55kg Continuous. In the quarter finals, Helen had a very energetic and quick opponent, but Helen kept the score close and used her experience to take the fight with a very strong finish. In the semi finals, she had a similar styled opponent, and after a high paced two rounds Helen lost out marginally to the eventual winner. However she took an excellent bronze and finished what was a superb day.

On the Sunday both Liz and Mary competed in the intermediate points. Mary in the -55kg division came up against a much more experienced fighter in the first round and although she gave a great account of herself lost 7-3. Liz fought in the -70kg division and started really well, winning her first fight by clear 10 points. In the semi final she had an excellent Greek fighter and after an enthralling 3 minutes it was tied at 11 all. In the extra time though, Liz held her nerve to win out 13-11. In the final, the previous days fighting and the days high paced fights caught up with her and although she fought very well, she narrowly lost out in the final by a couple of points. All in all it was an excellent two days of competing with some great results and fantastic performances.
